BISHOP THANKS EVERYONE!

UPDATES:

Bishop20Bishop21JULY 20th:  Bishop decided to move to Illinois with his foster mom.  After losing all of her personal kitties in the fire, one of Bishop’s Foster moms became extremely attached to Bishop and decided to adopt him.  Although his little feet are doing so very well and have healed, he will require periodic vet visits to check his lungs for lung disease from being exposed to so much smoke.

Bishop’s little feet have healed miraculously and he now runs, jumps, climbs, and wrestle’s with his new friend Castle.  We all wish him the best in his new home.

Bishop05Bishop07JUNE 14th:  Bishop has finally come home from the hospital and despite his little feet bleeding off and on (because of the dead skin sloughing off) he is doing exceptionally well.  Bishop is acting as if he is trying to make up for lost time!  He runs, plays, jumps and seems to have a hard time sitting still.  He is so very affectionate when he finally winds down at night to go to sleep.  His foster mom says he likes to snuggle his head into your neck and pat your face with his little paws.

Right now, it appears he will have to have the little piece of bone cut off on his front paw.  This is where the paws was burned so badly all the tissue surrounding his toe died.  The vet has assured us that he is not in any pain and that the nerves are dead.  Right now it is just a matter of daily hydrotherapy, antibiotics, and putting honey on his sores to promote the healing process.

We will know more about what the next step in his care will be when he sees his veterinarian in a couple of weeks.

Paws Animal Rescue wants to thank everyone who has donated to cover his medical care.  Because of so many kind individuals Bishop has received nothing but the finest in medical care!  THANK YOU ALL SO VERY, VERY, VERY MUCH!

Bishop03JUNE4th:

This is a picture of Bishop in the hospital yesterday.  He is said to be doing quite well although, he did lose part of his toe on the right front paw today.  You can’t see it in the picture but you can see where the top of his little foot split open from the dying tissue.  The vets are removing the dead tissue along with soaking his feet in antiseptic and hydrotherapy daily to prevent him from developing gangrene.  Bishop also had bloodwork today.  His kidneys are almost functioning normal but his white cell count (indicates infection) is extremely high.  Our vets are concerned about the high count although they say it is an indication that he is still fighting off infection from all the dead and dying tissue.  After removal of dead tissue today he currently has exposed bone on the toe.  This will have to most likely be repaired.

They explained his injuries to me saying “it is as if you were severely sunburned and the dead skin starts peeling off revealing new skin underneath”.  Unfortunately, this is as if his little feet (especially the right foot) were cooked.  If he continues to improve, he will be able to come back home on Tuesday where we will be continuing his supportive care (soaking, hydrotherapy, fluids, antibiotics, etc…).

JUNE 3rd:  Bishop was rushed back to Lake Olympia Hospital this morning.  The skin on his little right paw had suddenly split wide open.  Our vet said his front paws along with one back paw had been burned by heat and the tissue is starting to die.  He will have to stay in the hospital for 4-5 days so they can carefully remove (daily) the tissue as it dies off to prevent gangrene.  He will have to have his feet soaked daily in antiseptic and hydro-therapy several times a day.

His back paw appears to have healthy tissue reappearing and will most likely be fine.  However, they can already see that one toe on his front right paw will have to be removed.  They will also be checking to see if his lungs, kidneys, liver, etc... are working properly.  Our vets say that Bishop is an unbelievable little fighter who refuses to give in.

Bishop 3MAY 28th:  Bishop is now back with his fostermom.  His daily care consists of nebulizing (for his lungs), intravenous fluids, antibiotics, hydrotherapy on his front feet, special food, and lots, and lots, and lots of love.  His lungs appear to be clearing but he still needs fluids for the kidneys.  He will be on antibiotics for a while because his little front feet are so very swollen.  Bishop tried so hard to dig his way out of the smoke and fire that he ground his little nails down into the nail bed.  He will be going to Lake Olympia on Thursday (June 3rd) for x-rays on his lungs and feet.

MAY 27th:  Bishop still has an oxygen tube in his nose (just as a precaution) but is currently off oxygen.  He is processing oxygen through his lungs on his own.  He has some eye site that has returned and hopefully will completely return.  Eric (vet tech at Lake Olympia) was syringe feeding him this morning when he sat down the bowl to grab a towel behind him so he could clean Bishop, and little Bishop dove into the bowl and proceeded to eat on his own.  He is off of Lasix (diuretic for the fluid in his lungs) and is on antibiotics.  He is maintaining normal body temperature, eating, drinking and doing well.  Bishop will remain at Lake Olympia until tomorrow at which time he can come home.

I just want to thank everyone who has said a prayer for this baby’s recovery.  He is truly a God Send and a fighter!

MAY 25th:  Bishop was the only survivor of 20 kittens/cats at a Paws’ Volunteer’s home on Tuesday where they were being fostered.  Everyone died due to smoke inhalation with the exception of one little 4 ½ week old orange tabby kitten.  Bishop is currently hospitalized due to pulmonary edema which develops from smoke inhalation.  We do not know at this time if he will survive but our Veterinarians at Lake Olympia Animal Hospital are doing everything they can to save him.
